STORIA DELLA CANZONE:
questo brano tradizionale venne registrato per la prima volta, probabilmente dal gruppo The Weavers il 21 febbraio del 1951 (Decca 27515) e raggiunse il secondo posto in calssifica vendendo oltre un milione di copie.
Nello stesso anno Vaughn Monroe raggiunse il 10° posto (RCA Victor 4114) e la Percy Faith Orchestra il 18° (Columbia 39328).
La parodia di John Glazer And The Do-Re-Mi Children’s Chorus del 1963 intitolata “On top of spaghetti” arrivò al 14° gradino (Kapp 526).
“On top of old smokey” è una canzone tradizionale delle colline del sud degli Stati Uniti ed è molto simile al brano “The little Mohee” registrato nel 1927 da Buell Kazee.
